The
boy’s father had been to Delhi on official work. Delhi is a good place to find
cheap stuff at a real good bargain. Father got two electronic wrist watches,
one for the boy other for his younger brother. When the boy saw the watch back
home after father returned from his tour he was exited and thrilled.
Coincidently, he had just learnt in his science class that there were two kinds
of watches, one was a mechanical and the other was an electronic. Now the boy
had seen both these watches on the wrist of his friends, but never really had a
fancy for them. But a gift is a gift for
any 10 year old and a watch was an unexpected gift. The watch was of course a
cheap local made watch. It was a fake Rado.
These watches were not water resistant. “Watch out!!!!” said Father. “If
water falls on your watch, it will stop working”. Mother was not to be left behind
and she added saying, “Take your watch off when you are washing your hands for
lunch, and don’t keep fiddling with the buttons”. The boy who was beaming by now, screamed
saying “Yes, I will”, as he and brother made their way to their school by foot.
In
school, the boy was the centre of attraction. The new watch on his wrist had
indeed drawn the attention of his classmates. They crowded around him to get a good look at
the watch and see what the watch has to offer. The ones who had a watch began
comparing their watches to the boy’s.
Soon the teacher entered the class and the students settled down for the
days classes. This went on till lunch and as the lunch bell rang, the children
ran towards the washbasin to wash their hands and settle for lunch. The boy too
washed his hands. As he was doing so, he realized that he had not removed his
watch form his hand. But it was too late; as the boy was frantically trying to
dry the watch the electronic display stopped working. Seeing this, boy panicked
and lost his appetite. He then struggled to eat this lunch and was all this
time fiddling with his watch. One by one his friends came to know about what
happened and they began fiddling with the watch. This started the process of
dismantling the watch. One by one the parts came off till nothing was left of
the watch. The display of the watch came on and off. Someone suggested that the
boy keep the watch under the afternoon heat. The boy did just that. He gave the
watch to one of the girls who had her place near the window where the sun was shining
brightly.
Soon
it was play time in the kids’ corner. The boy ran towards the girl and
collected his watch. The watch was working. But then it soon stopped. The boy
was on the verge of tears. He started telling everyone that it was not him but
someone else who had spoiled his watch. A few of the boy’s friends expressed
solidarity and pointed finger Karthick. The fight began in the line which was
making its way towards the kid’s corner. By the time they reached their
destination the watch was in pieces. The boy with his friends to comfort him sat
in the corner of the park and began the mourning.
“Didn’t,
I warn you”, said mother. “Hope you have learnt you lesson and be careful in
the future”, said father. The boy’s brother had a beaming face as he began to
remove his watch looking at the pieces of the boy’s watch.
The
boy of course was me. It was almost 7 years later when my dad got me another
watch a Sonata. It has been 10 years since I got that watch and it has been
serving me faithful and has been with me through the rains and sunshine’s of my
life. My one constant friend and companion, my watch!!!!!! .
